The Farm

Our property in the Lincoln Heights section of Hempfield Township has history that dates back to before the Revolutionary War.  An old log cabin that was once part of the original property is still standing and has been restored/expanded by our neighbor, John Medsger, is believed to have been built in 1775.  Rob and Theresa have two of the original land transfer documents framed in their house, and they detail the transfer to John and Jane Roberts in 1795.  Then upon Jane’s death in 1805, the estate was purchased by the Jacob Haynes (later spelled ‘Haines’) family.

The Haines family owned and operated this land for over 150 years, primarily used for dairy and beef farming.  One of the daughters from the later generations of the Haines family, Minnie Haynes, married a man named Elmer Hobaugh and Elmer operated this farm for many years between the 1920’s thru the early 1980’s, before he sold the farm to Jim Sr. and Alva Boley and their family.  The Boley’s allowed Elmer to live out his days in the farmhouse, and farmed the fields as cornfields to provide feed to local farmers.  After a tragic accident on the farm that took the life of Jim and Alva’s son, Jim Jr., the Boley family decided to sell the farm at public auction in 1992.  The Very Family purchased the farm at that auction, and have owned and updated the property since that time.

The original barn was built in the late 1800’s, refurbished in 1929 by Elmer Hobaugh, and then finally taken down and restored in its new present location on the hill in 2017.
